Fanzine Issue One

Burning Fight

88 pages documenting the intersection of 90s hardcore, running culture, and the straight edge lifestyle. This independent publication features exclusive interviews with Damnation A.D. and Thrive, the thrilling Bryan Poerner story, original photography and vintage flyers from an era that defined underground culture and music.

An all-D.I.Y. effort, printed on recycled A5 paper.

Beyond nostalgia, this is the documentation of a movement that continues to influence and inspire.

Making a fanzine again after all those years made me notice something I hadn’t thought much about before: there used to be quite a lot between having an idea and putting that idea into the world. Now there is almost nothing.

And I’m increasingly unsure whether removing all that friction, all the waiting, pondering and reworking, has only been a good thing. Some things might need a third coffee. Or another day. Two days. Or someone telling you it’s crap.

I don’t think Burning Fight is actually about remembering the 90s. The 90s are over. Thank god for certain parts of that. What interests me much more is what survived from it.

We run now. We have jobs. Willpower exists. Our lives got considerably bigger and more complicated. And yet, give us an idea we care about and obviously we’re still capable of spending a completely unreasonable amount of time making some little thing from the heart that nobody asked for.

I find that reassuring.

I grew up surrounded by people who were actively shaping the local hardcore scene, and I wanted to contribute too. Playing in a band wasn’t really my thing, but I was constantly taking photos at shows and while skateboarding, so starting a fanzine felt like the obvious next step.

What began as a rough cut-and-paste zine with 100 or 200 copies eventually grew into a professionally produced magazine with runs of several thousand. Even after I stopped, the urge to make one again never really disappeared.

This time I wanted to bring in something else that had become just as important to me: running. The idea of combining hardcore, Straight Edge and running had been floating around for years. When the timing finally worked, it came together fast.

For me, Burning Fight became more than making another fanzine. It was a way of revisiting a part of my life and finding out that the same energy was still there. Different time, same dedication.
